Why every partnership needs its own memory

An investment lives for a decade. An inbox forgets it in a month.

If you've ever tried to find out why you and your partners committed to a deal three years ago - what the thesis actually said, who flagged the risks, what the original term sheet looked like before the side letter - you already know the problem. The deal flowed through email threads, WhatsApp messages, a shared Drive folder, a couple of comments in a CRM, and the rest of it lived in your head.

By deal twenty, the head doesn't remember. By deal thirty, the inbox has been search-purged twice. And the K-1 from year four of a six-year hold is sitting in someone's downloads folder.

What "the memory" actually means

For an operator-investor partnership, the memory of a deal is at minimum these things:

• The original deck or memo that came in.
• The conversation between partners that evaluated it.
• The written thesis at the moment of commitment - what you believed, what you were betting on, what would make you wrong.
• The sub docs, side letters, wire instructions.
• Every capital call, every K-1, every distribution.
• The lean rollup at decision time (who said yes, who said no, who hedged).
• The exit terms when it happens.

That's not a CRM record. It's a multi-year, multi-actor record that needs to stay coherent across years. Most partnerships keep this in five or six different tools and lose 30% of it within 18 months.
